Green Card through Marriage
Every year, thousands of people receive a US green card—permanent residency—through marriage to a US citizen. When a foreign national marries a US citizen and is in the US, the foreigner must apply for an adjustment in immigration status through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). If the foreigner is outside the United States, your immigrant visa application for a K-1 visa (sometimes known as a marriage visa) will be handled through a US Consulate's Office. as a non-immigrant visa application. Adjustment of Status ProcessThe process of acquiring permanent residency through marriage to a US citizen is not automatic and must be done correctly. After the marriage, the citizen must file an I-130, and the foreign national must file the application for adjustment of status, I-485. There is a medical examination, an interview, and, if all goes well, permanent residency (green card) is granted. If the marriage is less than two years old, the permanent residency status is issued conditionally.
